Environmental radiation shielding can you help protect you and your employees from unwanted dose. TransWare can help by developing detailed models to address your specific situation.

Drywell Dose

One area of recent concern is the reactor drywell. The amount of dose due to penetration streaming is a primary concern for many of our clients. How much dose is the equipment receiving? Are workers properly shielded when entering these regions?

Previous attempts at solving this problem have used simplistic two-dimensional and three-dimensional synthesis methods to determine the dose. However, with RAMA's fully three-dimensional methodology, we can take the guess work out of the problem and put the correct source in. RAMA's source calculation, coupled with MCNP, provides a more accurate assessment of the dose levels in accordance with IEEE 323. Our evaluation can offer the following:
  • Three-dimensional representation of gamma and neutron transport in the cavity region of the reactor, including horizontal piping and nozzle geometry through the RPV.
  • Streaming of gamma particles and neutrons in the vicinity of RPV and biological shield penetrations.
  • Source terms at biological shield interface that produce a reliable profile of the gamma and neutron dose rates in the nozzle penetration regions of the reactor drywell.
  • Correct assessment of backscatter effects.
  • Detailed MCNP geometry representations of the biological shield penetrations for each penetration of interest, both above and below the active core.
In addition, if you've already performed a RAMA fluence evaluation then you've already taken the first step. With little effort, we can use your existing RAMA model to jump-start the process. To learn more, visit our resource library.

Dry Cask Storage

The efficient and safe storage of spent fuel is a rising concern for our aging reactor fleet as space becomes more and more limiting. TransWare can help you get the most out of your spent fuel program by providing support in almost every aspect of the process, including:
  • Fuel and Component Characterization
  • Cask Loading Plans
  • Program Procedures
  • ALARA Planning Stages
  • Engineering Evaluations
  • Third Party Reviews
  • Program Training
We are also 10CFR 72.48 qualified. To learn more, visit our resource library.
