Rad Shielding and Dose Calculations

Environmental radiation shielding can you help protect you and your employees from unwanted dose. TransWare can help by developing detailed models to address your specific situation.

Previous attempts at solving dose problems have used simplistic two-dimensional and three-dimensional synthesis methods. However, TransWare’s fully three-dimensional methodology reduces inaccuracies and conservatism inherent in synthesis methods. Accurate RAMA source calculations, coupled with MCNP, provide a more accurate assessment of the dose levels in accordance with IEEE 323. Our evaluation can offer the following:

  • 3-D representation of gamma and neutron transport
  • Gamma and neutron particle streaming treatment in penetration regions
  • Correct assessment of backscatter effects.

Existing RAMA fluence models, if available, can be used to provide a convenient basis for the modeling process. The end results is a best-estimate assessment of the equipment aging profile and a detailed report to support your equipment qualifications and personnel dose evaluations.

Case Study: Drywell Dose

Recent concerns have arisen regarding the dose received by workers in the drywell region during component inspections. The greatest source of which is caused by particle streaming through nozzle penetrations present in the biological shield. A recent evaluation was performed on a BWR using a coupled RAMA/MCNP model which provided detailed 3D dose maps in the drywell region.
